REMI: I'm going to show you how to inject an input to program using pipe, and using file redirection. You already know some ways to redirect an output to another command, or an output to a file. Remember that if you echo, "hello," you can redirect the output -- that will be "hello" in that case -- to a file using the greater sign >, file.txt, or to another command using the pipe, like this: | And for example, less. If I hit Enter, then the less gets the input "hello," and you have to quit the less command. Let's do the same with a program that is written in C on the left. So let's run this program first to see what's happening. So it is asking for my family name, sharrock; then my first name, remi; then my age, 18. And then we have a final result-- family name, sharrock; first name, remi; age, 18. So what I can do is using the same technique to inject the input to the program, actually. So the first technique is to use a file. So we will create a file that is called responses or answers. answers with all the answers of the questions. So in the answers I will put sharrock first, and then a new line, then remi, then a new line, then 18, then a new line. And here I hit the Control D. And if I look at the content of the file answers and I print it using cat, like this, of course I have the three answers. So how do I inject these to my program? Well, I can still use cat answers. So it will output sharrock, then new line, remi, then new line, then, 18, and new line. And I redirect this output with a pipe to my program. So here I put ./program And when I hit Enter, then it will ask the three questions, and it will inject the input of what was outputted by cat answers, which means sharrock, remi, and 18. So at the end, we have indeed family name, sharrock; first name, remi; and age, 18. The second way to do that is to invoke the program like this, but instead of redirecting the output of this program to a file -- you already know how to do that like this -- we will take a file on the right, and put it as an input in the program. For that we won't use the greater-than sign: >. By the contrary, we will use the less-than sign: < and here, the input as a text file. So the name is answers, just like this. And here it will get as an input the content of the file answers. Let's try that. And indeed it worked, because I have at the end - family name, sharrock; first name, remi ; age, 18. So both ways you can redirect the output of a command inside the input of a program using the pipe, like this. Or you can redirect the content of a file to the input of a program, like this, from right to left.
