REMI : So in this video, as you see, WebLinux is booting, we will see very basic commands that I will type in the command line interface. So on the right side, you have this blinking cursor just at the bottom of the black area. This is the command prompt. So the command prompt is exactly tilde, then a space, then a dollar and then a space, and then the blinking cursor. So it is asking for a command. It is a command prompt. It is prompting for a command. Here, you will type some commands. You will type the Enter key. And when you type the Enter key, it will interpret that command and display some things on the terminal. All right. So the first command I want to show you is whoami. So I type whoami. And this command is quite funny because it is exactly what it sounds like. whoami will display the username that is logged with this system. And on WebLinux, you don't have to type username and a password because I already configured WebLinux so that it is automatically logged in with a specific user. And we will see the name of this user when I type Enter. So who am I? user. So the username is user and there is actually no password to boot web Linux. Usually on a Linux system, you will have to log first with a username and password. And of course, Linux is multi-user so you can have different users with different passwords. And each user will have a home directory with different files, et cetera. So if you want to see a very little help of command before you try it, when you can add an option, for example, whoami. And then you add space. And then --help. And then you type Enter. And then you have little help here. First, you have usage. So how to use it. Well, you just type whoami. And then a little line here that explains what it does. Print the user name associated with a current effective user id. What is an id, actually? We can see our id by typing id, like this. And you see, when I type Enter, the user id, UID is 1000. The group id, gid is 1000 also. And the groups is 1000. Anyway, what's important here is to know that you have an id and the user id is 1000 for this user. But it doesn't matter so much. Just to see you how the commands are working on Linux. Let's try another command, logname. Let's try to see if there is help. So I put space, and --help. And logname, as you can see, is pretty much the same as whoami. It prints the name of the current user. Let's try logname. And I still have user. All right. A very basic command is something that prints something on the screen and then goes back to the prompt. As you can see, each time I type the Enter key after the command, then it displays something on the screen, and then you get back the prompt. You have the prompt asking for a new command. So another command very basic is echo. And it will just echo what you type after. For example, echo hello. And it will just print hello. Or a specific echo is echo $0. And this will not display $0. It will display the name of the interpreter of all the commands. So the name is here sh. And it stands for shell. And indeed, you have different shells. And the shell is what is interpreting the command on Linux. So it's an application. It's software that will get all the lines. When you type Enter, it will interpret them and do some stuff or ask the system to do something. So here we can see that the shell we are using is sh. And to know that, you have to type the command echo $0. So $0 is a specific thing that you have to type just to get the name of the shell interpreter that you are using for the system. The next command I want to show you is hostname. So hostname. Let's do the help first. Help and you can see that here, the help is a little bit longer. You have news usage with hostname, then options. So here the options are optional actually. That's why they are within brackets. And here, well, it's a difficult thing that you don't have to understand right now. And here, you have the options that are possible. -s, -i, -d, -f, -F. So let's try only hostname. What it does. Gets or set hostname or DNS domain name. I type Enter. And it will just display the name of the computer, the name of the computer that is registered in the system. And by default, on web Linux, that name is openrisk. So openrisk is the name of the computer that is running WebLinux. It is a specific name that is just specific to WebLinux. Usually when you use a computer in a company or you are at home, you will have the name of the computer. And you can set it up when you install Linux actually. All right, let's try uname. uname, let's see the help. It will print the system information. And then you have some options here. But we will try. So uname first. Oh, so the name of the system well, the system information, basic one, is the name of the system. And it's Linux. Let's try an option like this one. dash a or minus a (-a). It will print all the system information. Let's try that. uname space -a (minus a), and Enter. Oh, we have a little bit more explanation here. So we have Linux, which is the name of the system, openrisk, which is the name of the hostname of the computer. And then you have a bunch of numbers here. And this is the version of Linux that is running. And when it was built, I think, and also openrisk GNU Linux. Ooh so we are running some GNU under the hood. Right. Another very useful command is history. Just like this. And if I type Enter, I have all the history of the commands that I just typed. So I have 14 commands already that I typed. The two first ones are ones that are automatically done when web Linux is booting. So it's specific to webLinux. The other ones, it's just what I did. But to go back to an old command, you can use the up arrow. So if I hit the up arrow, just now, I will get to the last command. And again up arrow, uname -a, up arrow. And you go up like this, up to the number 2, which is the first command that I just typed. If I want to go back down, then I just hit the down arrow, and I go down that list, just like this. So you can navigate through the history using the other arrows, up and down arrows like this. It's very, very useful. All right, if I want to clear, well it's the command clear. Let's try another command, uptime. uptime will display how many minutes until the system was booted, so here we can see the hour. And then we can see that it is up for nine minutes now. And you can just see a bunch of other statistics like the load average, which is the load average of the CPU. But we will talk about this later. Also, I can show you the cal, which displays the calendar. So here, we are in September 2018. And I can see the help of the calendar just like this. So here, I can use an option, -j to use Julian dates. Ooh. What is that? Well, let's try. cal then space -j. And it will display the number of days since the 1st of January. So you have a Julian dates for this calendar. Let's try the command date. So date you have, well it's a simple date. Also, we can have a specific formatter for the date. Let's go to the help like this. date minus minus help. Oh. It's quite complicated. But here, you have the usage dates, some options, and the format, and maybe the time. Anyway, if you read and try to understand that thing here and recognize time formats-- oh, it's quite complicated. But I made it. And I want to show you how to display a date in a different format. So, look at this example. date +"%T" Ooo. We have only the time that is displayed. And if I type date +"%A %d %B %Y" and then we close the quotes. Press Enter. Ooh. We have something very interesting here. We have a percent A that is Thursday, Percent d 13. Percent B, September. Percent Y, 2018. So usually you can use this command very directly in the command line interface and have a little help using the --help. But, on the real Linux system, you would use the man command. The man command is the manual of command. Of course, you can have a manual of cal by using man cal for example. But it won't work on WebLinux and it will display "no manual entry for cal". Why that? Because I decided to get rid of all the manuals that are very, very big files. And it would take forever to download all the files, all the manual files. So usually what I do, when I want is to have some details on a specific command, I actually search on the Internet. So I just search on the internet, man and then the name of the command, and then maybe I add Linux. And I have a bunch of websites with all the specific options and the details of the command. But usually, when you are on a real Linux and you just type man and then the name of the command, you will have the full manual of the command. And of course, you can also do man man, which is the manual of the man, man command. All right. So when you are in the man, usually to get out of the manual you have to type the q key. And you will see that some of the commands that you type will get you in an application in the software and then you will won't have access to the prompt anymore. And you have to find in that specific software how to quit or how to exit and then how to go back to the prompt. So here, all the commands that you just saw, just displayed something in the screen and got back to the prompt. So you are not stuck in a software. But the next one that you will see, then you will have to find how to quit to go back to the prompt. So it's your turn, try those different commands that I just showed you. But be aware, be careful, because if you use another command that will get you into a specific software, you will have to find out how to quit the software.
